Warm Weather In Midland Odessa Means Snake Time-Stay Safe With These Tips!
Doesn't matter where in Texas you live--we have critters everywhere to beware of. One of those that are prevalent here in the Permian Basin is Rattlesnakes. Just one of the creatures that are venomous in our area that can cause all sorts of health issues. The bites aren't usually fatal unless left untreated or the person being bitten has an allergic reaction to the snake's venom, but that's not a reason to not take the danger seriously.

It's likely you'll encounter one at some point in your travels-either around your neighborhood while walking the dog, walking thru an open field, a park, or otherwise unoccupied area. So it's best to know what to do just in case such an encounter occurs so that you're not unprepared. A few simple things to remember to avoid catastrophe and being bitten:
1. STAY OUT OF THE WEEDS
Keep yourself (and your pet(s) away from bushes, brush, and tall weeds on your walk.
2. DON'T STRAY
Stay on the sidewalk or walkway--don't veer off the walking path
3. DON'T TOUCH!
If you do come across a snake-don't get near it or touch it even if it appears to be dead.
4. LEAVE IT ON THE GROUND
Don't pick up things along your walks like rocks or wood--snakes like to hide under these things no matter what time of day it is.
5. DRESS TO PROTECT
If you're going for a walk--wear jeans and boots to help prevent the bite from getting through to your flesh and injecting the venom into your body.
IF YOU DO GET BITTEN:
Don't panic. Don't try to catch the snake. Don't try to suck the venom out. Stay calm and get to the nearest Emergency Center or call Texas Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222.
