Landman, the hit Paramount+ drama set against the backdrop of the Midland-Odessa oil boom, has captured national attention as one of the most talked-about shows of the year, having been renewed for a third season amid strong viewership.

But one small detail has sparked an out-of-town misconception: The show's frequent use of the term "the Patch" to refer to the oilfields, a phrase that many locals in the actual Permian Basin rarely, if ever, use to describe their workplace or community.

Absolutely No One in Midland-Odessa Calls It "The Patch"

In the series, characters regularly discuss life and work in "the Patch".

This is shorthand used to evoke a gritty, rugged oil-field culture where landmen, rig workers, and executives interact.

This portrayal aligns with the show's aesthetic: dramatic confrontations, chaotic blowouts, and cinematic tension that resonate with viewers unfamiliar with the real Permian experience.

The show gets many things wrong when it comes to actual life in the Midland-Odessa oilfields.  However, this seems to be locals' biggest annoyance. Personally, the show radio DJs are mine.

Online conversations among people who grew up or work in the Basin suggest the term “patch” isn’t commonly used in Midland or Odessa.

Many oilfield workers and residents simply refer to “the oilfield” or “the work site.” The scripted usage feels more like television shorthand than regional vocabulary.

A recent Reddit thread by locals noted they rarely heard the term used, highlighting a disconnect between the show’s dialogue and real-life speech patterns.

For locals, the term “Patch” may not reflect real terminology in the Midland-Odessa oilfields.

However, Landman has undeniably put Midland-Odessa and the oilfield life on the national map, sparking conversation about how pop culture shapes perceptions of real places and real work.

At the end of the day, while it may be an annoyance to some, it's just a TV show.
