This afternoon, I was driving around Odessa with some coworkers, and the topic of gas prices in Midland-Odessa came up.

For context, I am from San Antonio and have only lived in the Permian Basin since January 2025.  However, I am not completely naive to the notion that the price of oil is a BIG deal for residents.

Practically the entire region is based on it.

Educating A Newcomer to Midland-Odessa

During this discussion regarding current gas prices, I inadvertently expressed my dislike for the high prices to a group of individuals possessing significantly more experience residing in or working within the Permian Basin compared to me.

I was quickly corrected and told...

"No. Dom, you live in Midland-Odessa, you definitely want gas prices to be high."

Look, I get it.

Gas prices are subject to fluctuation based on economic booms and busts, which is exceedingly true in Midland-Odessa.  Around here, it's common knowledge.

However, some long-term residents of the region may overlook the fact that the rest of the country does not think with the same perspective.

To everyone else, high gas prices = bad.

The reality is that elevated gas prices DO contribute to the economic well-being of the region.  It is just that people from outside the area are sometimes oblivious to the fact.
