We all know that Texas is a big state, exactly 268,597 square miles big, with approximately 1,798 cities dotting the landscape. (Texas Demographics) Plus, there are hundreds of more towns and unincorporated municipalities too. With so many cities and towns, settlers of a town had to be pretty creative when it came to naming their city.

Learning about how a town got its name is pretty interesting. When you see a list of Texas town names, it isn't hard to see that some of these Texas towns had something in common - FOOD! There are even a few here in East Texas named after food: Elkhart, Fruitvale, Grapeland, and Berryville.

While creating this post I learned that the town I grew up in had its name changed in 1877. I lived in a city called Grand Prairie, Texas in the Dallas/Ft. Worth metroplex. It was originally called Dechman but was changed to Grand Prairie because of the railroad company noticed the land was flat like a prairie.

While there are a few food-related cities in East Texas, there are many other communities in Texas that are named after foods like Bacon, Noodle, and Oatmeal, but they've been left off this list because they are no longer towns, just an area of Texas named after a food.

You could look at the list of Texas city names and come up with other lists, like Texas town names that would make your inner teenage self giggle! Yes, we've done that list too and we'll feature it again after these Texas towns that are going to leave you hungry because of their name!
