With a graduating class of around 500 students, it's pretty safe to say I went to a rather large Texas public high school at the time.

The year I graduated from South Grand Prairie High School, the school probably had around 2100 freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors enrolled. With a student body that large, it seems much larger than some East Texas towns.

While having that many students in school at once seemed normal to me, I realized it wasn't normal at all after moving to East Texas and learning that some people I worked with had only 50 or so students in their graduating class.

Now that the population of Texas has exploded and it has become the second most populated state in the US, the sheer size of some Texas public high schools is overwhelming.

Some graduating classes now have more than 1000 students in them. I can't even imagine going to a school that large with so many classmates in the same grade. Simply mind-blowing.

How many high schools are in Texas

According to High-Schools.com, there are 3,240 high schools in Texas. Of these, 2,813 are public, and another 427 are private schools.

With that many in the state, it's easy to think numbers in each school would be spread out until you consider that some of these schools are in big cities while others are in little towns.

What is Texas' biggest school?

Data from Public School Review shows that the biggest public high school is in Allen, Texas, named Allen High School. This is the largest public high school in Texas, taking out online and charter schools and focusing on in-person attendance.

Allen is a suburb in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. The public high school has 5,314 students.

Allen High School also happens to have one of the most expensive high school football stadiums in Texas, coming in at $70 million.

However, that doesn't compare to the $35 million stadium built in Melissa, Texas.
