‘Everyone Has an Oilwell, Right?’ Plus 4 Other Stupid Things Texans Are Asked
There are just some things people that are not from Texas just don't get, and movies and TV shows haven't helped out either. Here are some of the stupidest things I have been asked when traveling by people not familiar with Texas.
"Do you have an oil well in your backyard?"
Well, of course, I go out and flip a switch and my own personal pumpjack will fill up my gas tank with free gas, and then I just flip it back and I can change my own oil with the free oil that my pumpjack provides. I have seriously been asked that before. Now just imagine what your neighborhood would look like with a pumpjack in everyone's backyard.
"Oh, you're from Texas? I bet you spend all your off time in Dallas and Houston huh?"
Yes, when I get off work I just walk the 300-500 miles to Dallas and Houston and party like it's 1999. I love it when non-Texans don't realize that just because they came from a state that is the size of a Texas county, not all states are a mere stroll down the street to get across like their tiny state. Then they get shocked when you tell them that it is almost 900 miles from El Paso to Texarkana.
"How many horses do you have?"
Well, there is my workhorse that I only ride to work on, then there is my sport horse that I go to Dallas on to party like it's 1999, then there is the family horse that I use to carry the family on to go out on a picnic or to go to the mall. The film industry has made it to where everyone thinks we all own a horse just because we are in Texas. Not so much, but I have ridden a horse before, I am from Texas after all.
"Do you wear cowboy boots all the time?"
Yes, nothing makes a workout more of a workout than a good pair of boots on the treadmill. I do own a pair of boots but they are usually worn to a wedding or a nice night out to the country bar, but other than that, I am wearing sneakers or Sketchers.
"Do you have a pet armadillo?"
I was actually shocked anyone from outside of Texas had even heard of an armadillo, but this person had. Yes, my pet armadillo "Armee" goes with me everywhere and even has a bedazzled leash so we can really be seen out in public. Armadillos are not very cozy with humans, unless you feed them regularly then they will trust you more, so I guess it is possible to have one as a pet but not advised since they are wild animals, but they are kinda cute!!
