Chick-fil-a is testing a vegetarian* sandwich in three test markets: Colorado, South Carolina, and North Carolina. Time will tell if the sandwich "works" in these markets, but could it even stand a chance in Texas?

*The sandwich is prepared alongside meat items, so the vegetarian status of this sandwich is debatable.

I've already seen much grumbling in social media comments about this new offering. It seems that some folks are misinterpreting the intent of the new sandwich. In spite of being made of cauliflower, the sandwich contains eggs and milk and is not suitable for vegans.

It's simply the latest in a long line of plant-based offerings from fast food giants. Remember KFC's plant-based nuggies? Me, neither. Burger Kings Impossible Whopper is pretty good actually. Suffice it to say, it's been a mixed bag.

Apparently, the sandwich is for consumers who wish to have more vegetables in their diet. I'm not sure that deep-frying cauliflower is any healthier than deep-frying chicken, but it's certainly a vegetable.

I've had deep-fried cauliflower "wings" and they are surprisingly delicious. No need to navigate a bone there. The cauliflower stays just crunchy enough, and since it's so neutral, you just taste the breading and the sauce.

Would I bet on this sandwich doing well in Texas? No, I would not. I think it might be nice as an alternative for people who cannot eat meat due to different digestive ailments, and it might be okay for the occasional casual vegetarian. That's not a tremendous amount of people.

I hate to tell you this, but if you want to eat healthy at Chick-fil-a, you're better off getting a grilled chicken salad. Yet...another...grilled...chicken...salad. It isn't the easiest or funniest thing to eat healthily, but the rewards speak for themselves.
