What You Need to Know About Fireworks in West Texas This 4th of July

This year, for the first time in a few years, neither Midland nor Ector Counties have burn bans.  That means more fireworks!

The last few years, the rockets that go up into the air have been banned because they are dangerous.  This year, things are green and wet.  The Midland Reporter Telegram quoted the owner of a fireworks stand as saying there are about five items total that will be sold this year that were not available last year.
There are still some rules you need to be aware of:

- firecrackers are not allowed in or within 5,000 feet of the Midland and Odessa city limits.

- you can only shoot them off in the county

- you must be on your own property or you need to have the owner’s permission.
For example, in Midland, violators will have their fireworks confiscated and could be fined up to $2,000.  In Midland County, violators face a minimum $500 ticket.

You are also reminded to have at least a 5 gallon bucket of water handy, just in case.
