These Handgun and Rifle Calibers are the Most Popular in Texas
While the laws on firearm ownership and concealed carry are still in favor of the people, we Texans take these rights seriously. That stated I believe more and more Texans are carrying concealed handguns especially since some of the Texas laws have been relaxed considerably by Governor Abbott. In 2022 more handguns were purchased by women in Texas and the US.
Furthermore, the National Shot Show (America's convention on everything firearms) that is taking place in Las Vegas right now is debuting more and more handguns and rifles in different sizes, calibers, and believe it or not colors. Whether you're a man or a woman there is a handgun that will fit perfectly in your hand. However, you will have to search high and low to find the perfect fit.
To help decipher through all of this, here are some of the most popular calibers, sizes, and firearms we as Texans favor. I reached out to several of West Texas' largest firearm retailers for what is popular in their stores here in West Texas. What I discover right off the bat is everyone said "it all depends on the purchaser's age and whether that person is a man or woman.
If the person is older and a man they'll go for the bigger calibers and more than likely will be carrying a .45 ACP. However, if it's a younger man say in his 40s or younger he's most likely going to pick a 40 S&W or a 9mm. The women that are older will go for a .380 or .25 caliber because of the kick and if she's younger and a bit stronger will more than likely go for a 9mm handgun.

As for the size of the handgun, the manufacturers classify pistols in four ways, and it is mainly based on the length of the barrel. Here's how they measure up:
- 3 inches = Micro-pistols
- 3-3.5 inches = Sub-compact pistols
- 3.5-4.5 inches = Compact pistols
- 4.5 inches and bigger = Full-size pistols
Nonetheless, firearms sales have slowed across the U.S. in 2022 compared to gun sales in 2020 and 2021 and Texas total gun sales are still leading as one of the top three states in gun sales. Interestingly, more women buy firearms and more are taking concealed carry classes especially here in West Texas.
To find out more about which calibers are better for whatever game you're hunting, check out the Texas Parks & Wildlife or Texas Tribune websites, they are full of useful information and statistics.
