Last week I wrote an article about age requirements in Texas for children that we should all know about. You can read that one here. There seemed to be interest on this subject so I decided to write a follow-up article. I realized as a mother of 3 I'm not as well-versed in the child laws in Texas as I probably should be.

Now that school is officially out for pretty much everyone in Midland, Odessa and surrounding areas, the question is, what to do with the kids? For single,working mom's like myself, the task becomes finding a sitter. For others it is, well I have a teenager in my house now, is he/she old enough to stay home alone? Is he/she old enough to get a job?

You know I never really understood if it was the law or just common courtesy to yield to law enforcement and first responders when you hear the sirens and see them coming your way? My father was a fireman for many years, so when I was taught to drive, that was something he was adamant about, 'whenever you see a fire truck coming with the sirens and lights flashing get out of the way!' So the first official day of summer isn't until June 21st, but let's be real, we have had quite a few hot days this month already. What's a person to do when those temps hit triple-digits? Native Texans know that it is only a matter of time before the dog days of summer hit and we are scrambling in this West Texas heat to find creative ways to stay cool.

Texting and driving. Don't just don't do it. It is never a good idea for obvious reasons. So now that we've got that out of the way, what are the alternatives? Do you have one of those apps that informs friends and family, if they message you that you are driving and cannot text at that time? I've received those automatic messages before. Genius app by the way.

Why did I not know this until recently? I got my license when I was 16, literally....well nevermind it doesn't matter how many years ago it was but the point is no one ever bothered to tell me over the years that if I did this on my license, I could be breaking the law!
