Just down the road in Sweetwater, Texas, the Jaycees are getting ready to host their annual rattlesnake round-up, which is actually the largest in the world. The event takes place on March 10, 11th, and 12th at the Nolan County Coliseum, and it's not just about catching snakes. They really go all out and have a great time.

The event includes a carnival, a Miss Snake Charmer Pageant, The Sweetwater Rifle & Pistol Club Gun, Knife and Coin Show, a cookoff, a snake-eating contest, a beard contest, and several various snake awards.

I honestly had no idea that the rattlesnake round-up was about so much more than just catching snakes, and that's probably why I've never tried to check it out. I might have to wander over there this year and see what it's all about.

So, why do we have rattlesnake round-ups?

Basically, it all goes down for population control of what is considered to be a pest. Rattlesnakes are incredibly dangerous, and their population is booming. While we make get rid of tons of them, studies show that there is not a consistent downward trend in their population. So, it's safe to say, there are plenty of snakes to go around. That species is not going to be wiped out any time soon.

Do you like to go? I'd love to hear about it. Comment below this article on our Facebook page and tell me your favorite thing about the event and give me some suggestions for what to take a peek at while I'm there.
