The Permian Basin is a region that brings together people from various backgrounds. This is primarily due to the large number of oilfield workers who come to the area in search of opportunities in the gas and oil industry. Introducing Hick Hop

The concept of country music artists collaborating with hip-hop musicians dates back to the 1980s; however, it didn't gain popularity in the mainstream until the 2000s.  The notion of combining Hip Hop's swagger with country music's grit works exceedingly well together.  What may have started as a novelty has transformed into a cultural crossover.  This is where the term "Hick Hop" was coined and is rapidly becoming an undeniable force in the music industry.

Examples of Hick Hop

Artists such as Morgan Wallen, BigXthaplug, Nelly, and Brantley Gilbert, among others, have fully embraced this music subgenre. When it comes to radio airplay, Hip Hop stations have enthusiastically adopted the trend of blending rappers with country music stars, frequently playing these collaborations. In contrast, country music radio tends to be more hesitant, offering less airplay to these mixed genres. While some country stations do play this type of music, it is far more prevalent on Hip Hop radio.

Country Music Stars Lean Into Hick Hop

Hick Hop includes both rappers and country music singers; however, notable country artists are also rapping in their songs. Don't believe me? Check out the 2011 smash hit "Dirt Road Anthem" by Jason Aldean, where he is literally rapping.  This is just one example out of many, thus proving that Hick Hop is changing the landscape of music.

Artists Who Started Out in Country Music, But Aren't Anymore

Traditionally, music artists tend to stick to one genre for their entire career. However, lately we've seen a rise in singers hopping from format to format, trying their hand at anything that speaks to them.

Country has been a popular genre for music makers across the industry to dip their toes into, and there have been a few singers who have made Nashville their permanent home. And then there are a few country crooners who have left Music City to pursue careers focused on other musical influences.

We've compiled a list of artists who started out in country music, but aren't anymore.
