We all have a story.... A story of how someone that came into our lives saved us. Whether it's literally--like being pushed out of the way of a moving car or pulled back from stepping off a curb with a bus flying past.... Or figuratively--as in some advice or direction you were given that lead you down a different path in life. We've all had someone special be there at just the right moment when we needed them most. Could be a friend--a best friend; could be an Aunt or an Uncle, Mom or Dad, or even a complete stranger who happened to be nearby at the time.

We talked about this on the air and there was a caller who had a story about how she didn't listen to a relative on the farm when he told her to stay off of something because it could roll--and she ended-up rolling into an electric fence that shocked her repeatedly and stopped her heart. Her uncle was there to save her in time. My story comes from when I was 7 years old. My Dad's best friend Earl lived in Rockford Illinois, about 90 miles west of Chicago where I grew up. When I was 7--we went out there for the 4th of July weekend to spend time with his family. He had 6 kids-one of which was daughter Melody who was about 5 years older than me.

We went swimming in the Rock River that Saturday--and I wasn't a very strong swimmer at age 7 and was still learning--and the current in the river was a bit faster than usual that particular day. I remember going under water--and seeing the growth along the river bank of the vegetation coming out of the dirt river wall... And then everything went dark. I woke up and I was lying on my back above ground looking up at the sky. Melody had pulled me up from under water and saved me. That was 45 years ago this July. I've long since lost touch with all of those folks. Earl and his wife and my parents have all passed away, and no telling where Melody is today. But I know I'll be forever grateful to her for this life I've had ever since.
