Foodies across the popular social media app are just finding out that the stew that we love comes with a very controversial past- and they are not doing fine.

For a quick recap, our good friend Monika from our sister station KISSFM wrote an in depth look at the history of pozole, which you can check out there. But just for a quick recap.

Pozole's, which is a traditional soup or stew made from hominy with meat (usually pork or chicken), and can be seasoned and garnished with shredded cabbage, chile peppers, onion, garlic, radishes, avocado, salsa or limes, dates back to Aztec times.

According to BenitosMexican.com, the Aztecs added hominy to a seasoned broth since (corn) was considered a sacred plant. Apart from its tasty broth and hominy, Aztecs added protein provided by the prisoners whose hearts they ripped out in ritual sacrifice. Yes, you read that right, the meat that the Aztecs used came directly from the people they sacrificed!

Well, TikTok users are just finding out that their typical New Year's dish comes from such a dark place! And some are shocked to find out that they're probably the last ones to know!

However there are some who say that there really isn't that much proof that the Aztecs actually used human meat.

Whether it's true or not, I can't say I'm surprised to find this out. I'm sure at one point or another EVERYONE's ancestors used human meat for the dishes we all know and love today.

Pozole is delicious, what's in the past is in the past! Whatever you do, though, DO NOT USE THE RACHEL RAY RECIPE!
