Why Texas High Schoolers Go All Out With Homecoming Mums
You know that saying, “Everything is bigger in Texas,” well that is true for a lot of things but one thing that comes to mind immediately during high school football seasons is: MUMS!
If you went to high school in Texas, you know the drill: The bigger the homecoming mum the better! I remember back in my high school days girls would be walking down the halls with mums that were bigger than them!
Homecoming mums usually included fake chrysanthemums exploding with glitter, lights, stuffed animals, bells, and ribbons. And if you were a guy? You probably sported a garter, the more compact but equally bedazzled counterpart. Mums are considered to be the homecoming staple in the Lone Star State. But plot twist: they didn’t even start in Texas.
Where Did The First Homecoming Mum Appear?
According to Texashighways.com, The first homecoming mums showed up in Missouri back in 1911, the same year the state hosted the very first homecoming football game. By the 1930s, Texans caught on and turned the tradition into the glittery, ribbon-filled extravaganza we know today.
Back then, mums were made with real flowers. These days high school homecoming mums have artificial flowers because I’m sure real flowers would not be able to stand this Texas heat!

What Exactly Is A Homecoming Mum?
A Texas homecoming mum can stretch wider than your shoulders, with ribbons that can sometimes fall all the way down to your feet, and basically swallow your entire torso. (I’m not even being sarcastic)
Homecoming mums are usually just worn for game day where students walk around school in their glamorous mums and some even head to the homecoming football game in their mums. However, mums stay at home when it comes to the homecoming dance!
