People in the Permian Basin are no strangers to strong winds. The area's temperatures have been mild, giving us the perfect outdoor weather. Even though the temperature could make for the perfect day, the wind always has to ruin activities.

Growing up in Odessa I could tell you hundreds of windy day stories. I bought my first car when I was fresh out of high school and starting my journey at Odessa College. I was so excited about starting my new adventure and being able to go anywhere in my new Ford Focus.
One early day I was going to take my mom to run some errands and the day had been windier than usual. When she went to open my passenger door, the wind caught the door and popped it out of one of its hinges. Being a broke college kid, we just rigged it the best we could and kept it moving.
Even though this felt like one of the strongest winds I have experienced, it's nothing compared to the strongest winds recorded in the Lone Star State.

According to Texas Extremes, the maximum sustained wind was in Matagorda, Texas on September 11, 1961, due to Hurricane Carla.
That is nothing compared to the maximum peak gust that happened on August 3, 1970, in Aransas Pass and was caused by Hurricane Celia.
