Belton’s Water Will Be Smelly But Safe During February

If you think the water smells and tastes funny in Belton in the coming month...no, it isn’t just you.

Water Work

The water in Belton is going to smell and taste different this month as the Bell County Water Control and Improvement District No. 1 adjusts its disinfection process. The water work will last through the 28th of this month.

Chloramines to Chlorine

Throughout the month of February, the water district will use free chlorine instead of chloramines as part of its routine maintenance. Free chlorine is commonly used to prevent the buildup of nitrates and other byproducts. The system will pause ammonia use and rely solely on free chlorine to keep drinking water free from harmful microorganisms during the system maintenance.

Areas Affected by the System Maintenance

Areas that may experience a change in the smell and taste of the water include Belton, Killeen, Copperas Cove, Harker Heights, Fort Cavazos, Nolanville, 439 Water Supply Corporation and the Fort Hood Military Reservation.
