Severe weather affects everybody in the state of Texas. When it destroys property around the area, many people are left sad and searching for answers. Unfortunately, there are people that are looking to advantage of those who are hurting in a time of need.
How Many People Were Affected By Scams In Texas?
According to the Dallas Observer, a staggering amount of Texans were harmed by scams due to severe weather in the state. Weather deemed severe caused a lot of people in the Lone Star State, specifically 1.4 million to relocate due to problems caused by Hurricane Beryl. Per the Dallas Observer, money is also affected, as a total of $2 billion in damage was caused by wind.
But overall, how much of the state is affected by severe weather scams? Well, the Dallas Observer revealed that Instant Roofer data showed that over half of residents in the state, 63% to be exact, fell victim to scam. But what could a Texan see that actually a scam in disguise?

What Should You Do If You Think You're About To Fall Victim To A Scam In Central Texas?
Instant Roofer Founder, Jacob Petrosky, said the following about scams in Texas:
"It's absolutely shocking that it's so common for scammers to target people when they are at their most vulnerable."
Petrosky also provided helpful advice that would assist a resident of a state in avoiding falling victim. Make sure to look at reviews on a business, and make sure that everything in a deal is written down. Also don't pay upfront for services either.
But even with those tips, there are still chances to be affected by a scam as revealed by Petrosky:
"Post-disaster scams aren't limited to shady contractors. After a disaster, people also fall victim to fake [Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)] representatives, fraudulent charities, or identity theft scams involving phony relief applications and utility shutoff threats."
