What It’s Like to Join a Tyler Police Ride-Along
(KNUE-FM) Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be a law enforcement officer in Texas? It’s not an easy job, but if you really want to know what it’s like the city of Tyler does allow citizens to accompany an officer while on duty as part of their Ride-Along Program, although there are certain policies in place before being approved and certain rules you must follow during the ride along.
What Is the Tyler Police Ride-Along Program?
When I was growing up, I loved watching shows like COPS or America’s Most Wanted. It was fun seeing officers that were truly doing their best to serve the community and deal with situations that most of us will never face. While I never attempted any career in law enforcement, I was able to do a ride along and I think it’s something that everyone should try at least once to learn more about their community.

What You’ll Experience During a Ride-Along
It was fascinating to see all the tools that law enforcement has readily available to deal with different circumstances. But it also opens your eyes to some of the heartbreaking situations these officers must deal with on a regular basis, sometimes caring for people who can’t or won’t care for themselves.
When I was doing my ride-along, I learned that many officers tend to deal with the same people numerous times as they always seem to need more help. It also showed me how vital it is for officers to work together and communicate effectively when working to accomplish something.

Rules and Policies You Must Follow
